I think I still have a couple of internal modems out in the shed, Maybe I'll bring one up and throw a few carriers around.

When I was running GT Power under dial-up 30 years ago, a fellow
Sysop and ham radio operator had logged on. We were in chat, and I
decided to play a joke on him.

He stepped away from the console for a few minutes, and I typed
in NO CARRIER -- to make it look like we had gotten disconnected.
    Shortly thereafter, he disconnected!!

When I confessed to the dirty trick, he replied "Hee hee hee.
    @$$hole!!" <G>

Cool!! That sure brings back memories.

I thought about getting the sound of the modem connecting, and
    then lead into an announcement that "I'm working on the BBS"...but telemarketers and others would think they had dialed a fax line;
yet it wouldn't connect when they tried to send a junk fax.

When I ran a dial-up system, I used BGFAX with InterMail at the
front end, before loading the BBS. No telling how many junk faxes
came in...but the funny part was that they were all saved to files,
and no paper or ink was wasted. <G>

I used to use RemoteAccess to run my BBS in the 90s, and at the time, I often used IceChat to chat with users. IceChat had a sysop feature where it could create fake line noise, generating random characters at random locations on the screen. So if you didn't want to chat with a user anymore, you could start doing that and say there's line noise so that they'd go away. :P

I always wanted to do that, figure some way to manage inbound fax when I
ran the BBS and consulted on the side.

Reminded me of a scene in Ted Lasso, when he's trying to find a fax at a
hotel in England to send something to his divorce lawyer. The woman in
line asks if he's trying to get a message to 1997.

Ted says, "Yes, I'm telling myself to buy Apple stock".

The concierge tells him that the hotel does not have one, but he's
contacted a tanning salon a ways away that has one.

I did the same. BGFAX/2 on an OS/2 system.

    distinctive ring.

I had tried using the BGFax option, but I could never get them to print correctly so I picked up a cheap fax machine and used distinctive ring
on my voice line for years.

When I was no longer contracting for the gubment I was able to cancel the number as they were the only place that still used fax (in my business)

Intermail was the last mailer I ran before I dropped out of FidoNet around 96 or 97. I liked that mailer for it's simplicity. And it just worked.
